Publikace zaplňuje citelnou mezeru odborné literatury k osvojování podnětů starého Řecka a Říma v českém novodobém umění. Oborově zahrnuje tvorbu od sochařství po fotografii, okrajově i užité umění a architekturu. V patnácti kapitolách pojednává souhrnně i v detailu „přímé“ inspirace antickými díly, zejména sochařství, a odkazuje i na zprostředkování následujícími klasicismy. Hlavní důraz však klade na způsoby ztvárnění prvků antické mytologie charakteristické ve střídavých poměrech novodobé umělecké scény. Publikace přináší nový přístup k tématu: všímá si mimo jiné toho, čím byly kdy výtvarné odezvy na antiku v českém prostředí příznačné nebo i relativně ojedinělé. Je vybavena bohatou obrazovou přílohou.

Svazek přináší řadu studií domácích a zahraničních badatelů zaměřených na dějiny filosofie a intelektuální komunikace. Mimo jiné se jedná o studii Simona Burtona (University of Edinburgh) „Encyclopaedic Mirrors of the Soul: Comenius, Pinder and the Transformation of Cusan Optics“, v níž autor zkoumá vliv Pinderovy kompilace Kusánského prací na Komenského dílo, širší kontext novoplatónské metafyziky a Komenského recepci optických metafor vědění (oko, zrcadlo, brýle aj.). Další z příspěvků z pera Marcely Slavíkové (Filosofický ústav AV ČR) „Vir non vulgari eloquentia: Joachim Hübner’s Elegance of Expression“ analyzuje devět rozsáhlých latinských dopisů Joachima Hübnera Komenskému a věnuje se jeho sofistikovanému latinskému stylu. Recenzní studie Věry Schifferové (Filosofický ústav AV ČR) kriticky rozebírá monografii Jana Čížka Komenský a Bacon, zatímco Martin Škára (Univerzita P. J. Šafárika, Košice) detailně diskutuje edici a překlad Leibnizova dialogu Pacidius Philalethi, který publikoval Jan Makovský. Recenzní rubrika zahrnuje pět dalších rozprav.

Das Ziel dieses Buches ist die Erforschung der Venus-Statuen. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte haben sie sich dem Aussehen an reale Frauenbilder mal mehr, mal weniger stark angenähert. Von der Antike bis ins 21. Jahrhundert schwankten die Bildhauer zwischen der idealen (und daher faden) Schönheit, die die Göttin charakterisiert, und den verführerischen Formen des Körpers einer lebendigen Frau, die sich aus verschiedenen Gründen nie ganz behaupten konnten. In der Antike wurde dies durch die Tatsache verhindert, dass die Statue eine Göttin darstellte; im nachantiken Europa lag es vor allem an dem Tabu, weibliche Nacktheit darzustellen. Venus hätte als nackte Frau mit allen rassigen Details dargestellt werden können, aber der Betrachter hätte eine solche Darstellung kaum ernst genommen. Die Künstler hätten auf attraktive Merkmale des weiblichen Körpers verzichten können, aber wie hätte der Betrachte die Darstellungen dann als Venus, der Mutter des Amor, erkannt?

Souhrnný a v mnoha ohledech nový pohled na nejrozsáhlejší Platónovo dílo jako na nejdůležitější dokument jeho politického myšlení. Ačkoli je dialog Zákony v tom hlavním ohledu v souladu s Ústavou a Politikem, když ústřední politickou roli přisuzuje filosofickému vládci, oproti těmto známějším Platónovým dílům obsahuje zřetelnější formulaci vztahu filosofa ke zřízení a zákonům obce, k empirickým předpokladům politiky a rovněž k jeho spoluobčanům. Mohl se tak stát nejen předlohou historických zákoníků v Platónově době, ale rovněž výchozím dílem tradice návrhů nejlepšího zřízení od antiky až po moderní dobu.

A groundbreaking interdisciplinary volume bringing together the latest in Wycliffite and Hussite scholarship on methods, impact, and responses.

John Wyclif (d. 1384), famous Oxford philosopher-theologian and controversialist, was posthumously condemned as a heretic at the Council of Constance in 1415. Wyclif’s influence was pan-European and had a particular impact on Prague, where Jan Hus, from Charles University, was his avowed disciple and the leader of a dissident reformist movement. Hus, condemned to the stake at Constance, gathered around him a prolific circle of disciples who changed the landscape of late medieval religion and literature in Bohemia, just as Wyclif’s own followers had done in England.

Both thinkers, and the movements associated with them, played a crucial role in the transformation of later medieval European thought, in particular through a radically enlarged role of textual production in the vernaculars (especially Middle English and Old Czech), as well as in Latin, in the philosophical, theological, and ecclesiological realms.

This interdisciplinary volume of essays brings together cutting-edge research from scholars working in these and contiguous fields and asks fundamental questions about the methods that informed Wycliffite and Hussite writings and those by their interlocutors and opponents. Viewing these debates through a methodological lens enables a reassessment of the impact that they had, and the responses they elicited, across a range of European cultures, from England in the west via France and Austria to Bohemia in the east.

The present volume offers a collection of papers on one of Plato’s most intriguing dialogues. Although not a running commentary, the book covers the majority of difficult questions raised by the dialogue in which the subjects of language and ontology are tied closely together. It shows why Plato’s Cratylus has been highly regarded among readers interested in ancient philosophy and those concerned with modern semantics and theory of language. This collection also presents original views on the position of the dialogue in the whole Plato’s œuvre and in the context of Plato’s contemporaries and successors.

Reflexe je odborný recenzovaný časopis pro filosofii a theologii založený v roce 1985 Ladislavem Hejdánkem. Vychází dvakrát ročně. Zaměřuje se na původní studie, překlady a recenze knih. Časopis je zařazen na Seznam recenzovaných neimpaktovaných periodik vydávaných v České republice a do mezinárodních databází SCOPUS, ERIH PLUS, EBSCO a DOAJ.

The volume with a joint introductory chapter is in the first part devoted to Humanists publishing in the circle of the university of Leipzig at the turn of the 15th century: Paulus Niavis / Schneevogel (ca. 1453–1517) and Ioannes Honorius Cubitensis (ca. 1465–1504). The second part includes the translation work of Řehoř Hrubý of Jelení (ca. 1460–1514), mostly preserved in manuscript, the first translation from Ancient Greek into Czech by Václav Písecký (ca. 1482–1511), and a remarkable edition of Martianus Capella’s work De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii prepared by Ioannes Dubravius (ca. 1486–1553). The volume covers a relatively short period beginning in 1488, when the editions of Niavis and Honorius are first documented in Leipzig, and ending with 1516, when Dubravius’s edition of Martianus Capella was published in Vienna.
