The nature of linguistic meaning has long been central to philosophy. Despite advances in semantic theory, its foundations remain controversial. The dominant paradigm is still the semiotic view (expressions represent meanings), alongside the emerging use theory of meaning. The project aims to deepen our understanding of the assumptions and consequences of treating linguistic meanings as objects, especially within contemporary formal semantics.
