The scientific title Doctor of Sciences (DSc., with the English equivalent “Research Professor”, Res. Prof.) was established by the Czech Academy of Sciences in 2002 as “a recognition of exceptionally high qualifications demonstrated through the creation of significant, scientifically original works that are important for the advancement of research in a given scientific field and that characterize a distinct scientific personality.

Applicants for this title may, after meeting the professional requirements, defend their dissertation before specially appointed field-specific committees, two of which are based at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

These are the Committee for the Defense of Dissertations in the Field of Philosophy and, more recently, the Committee for the Field of Classical Studies. The criteria for evaluating the dissertation and the candidate’s scientific profile in the field of philosophy are available here; for the field of classical studies, here. Additional documents and general information for applicants can be found on the website of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
