Summer School of Classical Studies
The Summer School of Classical Studies, organized by the Centre for Classical Studies at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1992, traditionally takes place at the beginning of July. Over the course of four to five days, the program offers highly specialized lectures on the reception of the ancient heritage, drawing from fields such as classical, medieval, and humanist philology, classical archaeology, Czech and world history, theatre studies, art history, philosophy, and related disciplines. Morning sessions also include reading of ancient texts in Latin and Greek.
Since 1998, each year’s Summer School has been dedicated to a specific theme and is not held exclusively in Prague – the program typically includes an excursion. Lecturers include not only members of the Centre for Classical Studies but also renowned experts from other academic and research institutions. The school is accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, and since 2012 it has been offered as an elective course for students of the universities in Prague, Brno, and Olomouc.
In addition to university students and secondary school teachers, high school students are also welcome to participate.

Summer School of Medieval Studies
The Summer School of Medieval Studies is a three-day series of lectures and seminars held every September at the Sázava Monastery. The event brings together several dozen PhD students from a wide range of disciplines related to the study of the Middle Ages.
Each seminar block is dedicated to a particular theme, with multiple speakers offering different perspectives on the topic. These exchanges often highlight contrasting interpretations of a phenomenon within a single field, or showcase how various disciplines approach the same subject from different angles. This interdisciplinary dialogue is at the heart of the Summer School’s mission. The program typically includes a half-day excursion as well.
While the Summer School is primarily intended for PhD candidates and university students, interested members of the public and secondary school students are also welcome to attend.
- The current year’s program is usually published on the event website, where participants can also register online (under the “Registration” tab), typically by the end of July.
