Precisely! On Exactitude as a Scholarly and Scientific Ideal

This talk will explore the notions of exactitude as a scientific ideal in both, the sciences and the humanities. Starting with an influential work of historiography about ancient metrology I will distinguish between three different concepts of accuracy, exactitude and precision, in order to trace their common roots as well as their interferences within the history of science. The second part of my talk will, then, discuss a rather methodological approach how to work with these three concepts in order to carve out the exactness of the exact sciences on the one hand and to bridge them to the methods of scholarship on the other hand.
