Christian Damböck (Universität Wien):
Noncognitive Deliberation or: What is the Political Legacy of Logical Empiricism?
Abstract
There is an ongoing debate about whether and in what sense logical empiricism had a political agenda. This paper first develops a rigorously positive answer to this question on the basis of a survey of original sources representing the respective views of logical empiricists at different stages of the movement's development. Second, this view of logical empiricism as "noncognitive deliberation" is defended against interpretations that criticize noncognitive deliberation as either (a) completely untenable, or (b) deserving of contextualization with practical rationality in the Frankfurt School sense, or (c) not political at all.
