Abstract
Prof. Matteo Martelli is professor of the history of science at the University of Bologna and principal investigator of the ERC-funded project AlchemEast: Alchemy in the Making: From ancient Babylonia via Graeco-Roman Egypt into the Byzantine, Syriac and Arabic traditions (1500 BCE – 1000 AD). He has published widely in the history of alchemy, medicine, science and philosophy, and has edited and translated the works of important ancient authors like the Pseudo-Democritus and Galen. Prof. Martelli will speak at the Alchemies of Scent seminar about his current research, which focuses on the Greco-Egyptian alchemical tradition, in particular the work of Zosimus of Panopolis and its reception in the Syriac tradition.
