David Ebrey: Timaeus’ Creation Myth
Abstract
I argue that we can better understand Timaeus’ speech and resolve a number of long-standing puzzles by thinking through the kind of muthos Timaeus tells. Sedley and Betegh have noted that Timaeus’ myth has the structure of a Platonic creation myth, of the sort that Protagoras provides in the Protagoras and Aristophanes provides in the Symposium. I show how thinking through features of this kind of story clarifies the overall structure and progression of Timaeus’s account, as well as several of its most puzzling ideas. But my most provocative claim is that it provides a new way to resolve the debate about whether Timaeus’ story should be read literally.
