Detailed information

Perfume Production in the Ancient World II

The second instalment of Perfume Production in the Ancient World is a collaborative working meeting focused on discussing papers developed out of our last international meeting. This effort supports the development of an upcoming volume aimed at revisiting the global history of ancient perfumery and its role in the history of science, art and culture.  At this meeting, we explore the production of scented materials (“perfumes”) in antiquity through diverse lenses—historical, archaeological, scientific, artisanal, cultural, and religious. We aim to move beyond traditional, monolithic classifications of ancient perfumery cultures (such as "Egyptian," "Mesopotamian," and "Roman") by narrowing in on how ingredients and perfumery techniques traversed different cultures, regions, and time periods. Additionally, we examine the variations in perfumery practices within the same culture across different locations and eras. This volume will provide a more nuanced and interconnected understanding of ancient scented material production, highlighting the dynamic interactions and exchanges that shaped perfumery in the ancient world.

Registration for the perfume conference will close on 4 October 2024. A catering fee of 1250 CZK applies.
