Mathematical Courses and Textbooks in the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries

This two-day conference will focus on the emergence and use of mathematical textbooks across a variety of educational contexts—including universities, military schools, and private instruction—with a focus on how these materials structured the discipline and addressed different audiences. Contributions will examine the authorship, intended readership, and institutional settings of these works as well as their role in the dissemination of new mathematical knowledge, such as in the teaching of infinitesimal analysis.
