Investigator: Mgr. Pavlína Libichová Cermanová, Ph.D.

Provider: Czech Science Foundation

Programme: Standard

Duration: 2024-2026

The project examines transformations of religious exclusion and persecution in the fifteenth century, when the image of the heretic was increasingly used in accusations of witchcraft. It focuses on the development of anti-heretical stereotypes in the Hussite context, from the Adamites to the Unity of the Brethren.

It is based on the polemical writings of Jan Vodňanský, especially the Locustarius, which draws on earlier and contemporary anti-heretical texts. The project analyses these discourses in the specific context of the Bohemian lands and explores their role in shaping identity and rivalry between religious groups.
