Mario Verdicchio: Critical perspectives on Digital Art

This lecture examines the evolving relationship between digital technology and artistic creation, specifically focusing on AI-generated art. By analyzing contemporary machine learning alongside historical precedents, it argues that while tools change, human experience remains the essential element. Ultimately, it posits that significant art requires human consciousness to transcend mere technical execution.

Mario Verdicchio is associate professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Bergamo. With a PhD in Knowledge Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, his research spans AI ethics, philosophy of mind and computation, computer art. In 2013, he co-founded the international conference series xCoAx on computation, communication and aesthetics. He has authored over 100 publications and three books, including the recent Che cos’è il digitale [What the digital is].

This event is organized as part of the project Human-centred AI for a Sustainable and Adaptive Society (HumanAId, reg. no. CZ.02.01.01/00/23_025/0008691), implemented by the Institute of Philosophy CAS. The main objective of the project is to develop methodologies and tools that will enable the potential of large language models (LLMs) to be used in a way that is in line with the value and normative requirements of specific users in civil society and government.
